When traveling there are a lot of things that come to mind. The first of which is where to travel to. Now that we live in an interconnected world there is virtually no place that can be ignored, and any destination is within reach. In order to satisfy the often-difficult decision of choosing your travel destination we here at Tour Point have a simple solution. Choose Medellin.
Colombia has historically been associated with violence whether it was a byproduct of guerrilla groups or a consequence of a heighten drug demand worldwide and the conflict between rival mafia groups that begun to appear in the region. Medellin was a hotspot during the 1980s the soon became the epicenter of the Medellin Cartel Mafia that ran the largest drug operation in the entire world with Pablo Escobar at the helm. During these dark hours, violence sprung along with corruption and high death tolls which resulted in a horrific international stigma. The result of this was the branding of Medellin as the world’s most violent city in 1988 by Times Magazine. A brand that most tourist still choose to adhere to when considering travel destinations.
However, times have changed, and the transformation undergone by Medellin has being extremely impressive. After the deaths of Pablo Escobar in 1993 Medellin soon begun to offset the violence that it had once lived by. The redefinition of the urban layout led by the ambitious Metro system that would connect Medellin from the north to south end is an example. Not only did it allow the community to access a public transportation, but it also reinstated the presence of local government in these often ignored populations where terror once reigned. Which brings us to the second pillar of transformation which was security. The presence of the military and police drove traffickers and other criminals into virtual extinction with little strength to pressure these communities and liberate them from their grasp. The third pillar was education. If there is ever a consensus regarding the breakthrough moment for Medellin it would have to be the moment that education was placed as a cornerstone of transformation. In doing so millions of young medellinenses begun to have hope and with it came progress.
Today Medellin is renowned as a technological hubspot of Latin America and has obtained numerous awards that entail and exemplify our transformation. In 2013, just 25 years after being labled as the “World’s most violent City” we became the “World´s most innovative city”.
