What are the Silleteros?
The silleteros are the heart and soul of Medellín’s world-famous Flower Festival. They are artisans from the nearby village of Santa Elena who craft elaborate floral arrangements, called silletas, and carry them on their backs as a tribute to Antioquia’s agricultural heritage. This tradition dates back to the 19th century, when farmers used wooden chairs (sillas) strapped to their backs to transport goods to the city.
Over time, this humble practice evolved into an art form that celebrates creativity, resilience, and cultural pride.
How the Silleteros Parade Began
The first official Desfile de Silleteros took place in 1957, when a group of farmers was invited to Medellín to showcase their flower-carrying tradition. The parade was so well received that it became the signature event of the Flower Festival, held annually every August. Today, over 530 silleteros participate, and the parade has been declared Colombia’s Cultural Heritage.
