Medellín’s Flower Festival Part II

Now that there is a general sense of what to expect when visiting Medellin’s Flower Festival, in this post we will explain aside from the desfiles de silleteros, what other variety of activities are there for visitors to enjoy. These being:

-        The National Trova Festival, a music competition that celebrates traditional Colombian music and poetry. During this event it is common to observe how eloquent men and women alike being a back and forth rhythmic battle where the idea is to embarrass one another through comical and typical phrases.

-        The Parade of Classic and Antique Cars, a procession of vintage cars that dates back to the 1940. Medellín was amongst the first cities in Colombia to receive motored vehicles. This is a great occasion to observe some of these cars first hand and take pictures since drivers and passengers are required to dress up according to the year of the vehicle.

-        The International Orchid Exhibition, a display of rare and exotic orchids from around the world. Medellín and Colombia alike is home to numerus species of birds and fauna. If you enjoy nature this is a great event.

-        To all those who enjoy the outdoors and working out, The Flower Festival has its own Marathon, a popular running event that takes place through the streets of Medellin with music and lots of fun.

All of these events are great but there are some recommendations as always: get there early: the desfiles de silleteros and other popular events can get very crowded, so it’s best to arrive early to get a good spot or there are paid areas where you can also attend. Please feel free to ask if you so request these accommodations. Also the festival involves a lot of walking, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
