Comuna 13 is definitely one of our most representatives spot in the city, also our number one urban tour. This place is one great example of the transformation that Medellin has been through. From violent and unsafe to artistic and innovative. Here we explain a little bit more.

Comuna 13 was geographicly strategic for all the bad groups, that is why all them wanted to be there in the 90´s. The urban war was the main scenario for this community during years. Kidnappings, homicides, extortions and so many violent situations. 

In 2002 the government wanted to rescue the territory. They did 3 powerful military interventions: Antorcha, Mariscal and Orion. 
The last one was the game changer. It took place in October 16th 2002, lasted 3 days, 24h confrontations, 2 black hawk helicopters, tanks, more than 50 militars from the USA special forces and more than 5.000 from the national Colombian forces. 

The number of victims and innocent people that got affected by this last operation was crazy. The official statement for this operation in comuna 13 is ¨Orion never again¨. Even though the territory got ¨cleaned¨, the sacrifice was not worth it. 

The main job of a government is to make sure their people is safe, good. Colombian state did not accomplish that job, that is why basically the country was owing this community. 

That is the reason why the escalators went to the comuna 13 and not to any other neighborhood, as part of the reparation process. 

Yes, outside escalators. As part of an innovation project, to help move people around in this areas full of hills and not too many roads.

Once the escalators were there, lots of people from all over the world started coming to see what is was about. That is how the graffititour was born. Local artists started to paint murals telling the story of the comuna, then art galleries and stores opened, and every year it keeps growing. 

Comuna 13 today is a different reality. Kids playing around, street art all over the place, tons of smalls business, good local food, rappers, dancers, amazing talented people and so much more. Comuna 13 is now the face of the artistic revolution, hope and hard work for a better future.
